Located in Largo in the heart of Prince Georges County, our new state-of-the-art regional medical center (UM Capital Region Medical Center) will provide improved access to primary and ambulatory care services, and serve as a tertiary care center for critically ill patients. In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince Georges County residents.


Job Description


Responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating all patient care activities and nursing services within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on a continuous 24-hour basis. Ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care by closely monitoring clinical practices and adherence to established quality standards and protocols. Oversees and strategically assigns patient care duties to nursing professionals and support staff, optimizing the utilization of their skills, expertise, and time to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Provides strong departmental leadership for the management and operation of the ICU, ensuring alignment with the Divisions goals and the hospitals commitment to excellence in critical care.


a. Actively supports, interprets, and promotes the hospitals and nursing departments mission, vision, values, philosophy, objectives, and standards. Leads and coordinates the implementation of comprehensive patient care activities and nursing programs that align with and advance these foundational principles.


b. Collaborates closely with nursing leadership and interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and implement innovative and evidence-based models of care and practice tailored specifically for the ICU. Ensures thorough assessment, meticulous planning, effective implementation, continuous evaluation, and accurate documentation of patient care processes to achieve optimal clinical outcomes while maintaining cost-effectiveness.


c. Cultivates and maintains a dynamic environment that fosters clinical excellence, professional growth, and patient-centered care. Anticipates and analyzes emerging trends in critical care nursing, acts as a proactive change agent, and leads initiatives to enhance and refine existing systems and workflows within the unit.


d. Coordinates with multiple hospital departments to establish and sustain a safe, therapeutic, and supportive environment in all patient care areas. Vigilantly monitors safety protocols, enforces environmental and equipment safety standards, and ensures strict compliance with infection control policies to protect patients, staff, and visitors.


e. Encourages and facilitates the integration of current research findings and best practices into clinical nursing practice, care delivery models, and management systems. Supports staff in adopting evidence-based approaches to improve patient outcomes and operational effectiveness.


f. Plays an active role in the strategic planning and development of nursing services within the ICU. Leads the operationalization and implementation of annual strategic initiatives, including organizing and promoting educational seminars, workshops, and training programs to enhance staff competencies and professional development.


g. Serves in a key leadership capacity on various Hospital and Division committees and councils. Demonstrates consistent engagement through active participation, regular attendance, and effective representation of the ICU and Division interests. Ensures timely completion of follow-up actions and facilitates transparent communication and information sharing across teams.


h. Provides meaningful administrative, management, and leadership development opportunities for nursing students and trainees. Strengthens the Hospitals partnerships with educational institutions to support clinical education, mentorship, and recruitment efforts.


i. Supports and contributes to the planning and execution of marketing and outreach activities, including professional development events, community health awareness programs, and public relations initiatives, to enhance the visibility and reputation of the ICU and the hospital at large.



Work Experience

Preferred: Master of Preferred Qualifications: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is highly preferred, except for candidates assigned to a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is acceptable. Completed coursework or program requirements should include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Candidates must possess 3-5 years of relevant clinical experience, with demonstrated leadership skills in an intensive care or critical care setting. Experience managing nursing staff and coordinating patient care in a fast-paced ICU environment is essential. Completed Course Work/Program: Bachelors of Science in Nursing
